At the top end of the garden is a long and narrow strip where we thought we might make an orchard of some sort. The long and thin nature would lend itself to an Espalier walk, like the one at East Ruston Old Vicarage:
but my wife suggested that we should create a Fruit and Nut Garden – in honour of my favourite food! Perhaps I should ask Cadbury’s for some sponsorship!
So the plan is to have espalier Apples and Pears on one side, and some Cob Nuts, and maybe a Sweet Chestnut and Walnut, on the other.
The first step was to roughly mowed a path to get comfortable with the proportions; this is facing South (away from the house):
Grass got a bit shaggy!
Dug a trench, for planting, with a JCB and then rotavated:
Looking in the opposite direction (facing North):
Whilst planting some hedges I marked out a “funnel shape” at the end nearest the house, so that you will enter through a narrow corridor, that then widens out, but as yet I have not had time to plant it. A job delayed until next year I expect.
Some of the Apple trees are up to the top wire already! :
