Pond looks more Mature

The grasses have become quite mature, and (hard to capture on camera) the “Transparent” grass is beautiful to look through to the pond when walking around it. (I’ll dig out its exact name, but its probably Molinia arundinacea “Transparent”). The Zebra grass (out fo shot a bit to the left) looks out of place so I will move that next Spring to the other pond, and split the Transparent grasses so they make more impact.

August 2010

The circular pond (in the far distance) is concrete, cracked, and leaking. Its just slightly larger than the largest sized “affordable liner” – or so I thought. I then came across some pond liners that are much thinner, made from a woven mesh embedded in the plastic sheet, and supposedly guaranteed for 30 years. Either way, its within budget, even if we have to renew it fairly soon, and the fibreglass in-situ lining that I had been contemplating I’m not going to want to afford for a long time!

Clearing the Circular Pond

Plenty of muck at the bottom to be cleaned out – luckily we had house guests that weekend, so had to find something for them to do!

Re-filling the Pond

All pretty straight forward. There is a concrete lip around the outside, originally for marginal plants, which needed removing – we are going to extend the lawn right up to the water’s edge, and it won’t like have only a few inches of soil. Should have done that before putting the liner in, but as ever busy-at-work often requires that things are done when the right manpower is available, regardless of the most sensible order.

Remove Concrete Surround from Pond

Something we hadn’t anticipated is that, from upstairs windows looking SW towards this pond, the reflections off the water are very special. We are planning to only have a small planting, on the North side of the pond, and some fish, so that we can walk right up to the water’s edge.

In 2014 we completed the round pond, tiling around the edge and creating a small weir to the middle pond (and a small waterfall to the bottom pond)

Hopefully you get the feel, from the photo, of the infinity-pond effect of reflections of the sky

I was just doing a search to find answers to a vine question and have ended up spending ages on your site. I love it! What fun your projects are and what fun to read about it all. I also started a ‘garden blog’ at the begining of a project but it lapsed and I took it ‘off-line’. You have inspired me to restart!

One day you will hopefully be able to sit back, glass in hand & look at it all & say… ” Wow, I did that & what a job”…!!!!! Smile……

Thanks Marley. Writing about it, and folk stopping by the website to have a look, is very therapeutic. Although the place continues to look like a building site, showing people round who visit us just once a year its pleasing to be able to show & tell them what we have done in the last 12 months.
