The 2014/2015 Seasons
2014 – Paving the Round Pond Surround
We had put this job off far too long! We wanted to have a paved surround to the Round Pond, sort of like an infinity-pool, in particular to catch the reflection of the sky and clouds from the terrace (where we sit out for meals in the summer)
We had some slabs lying around, taken up from some paving we put down years ago, which were cut up (to make slight traingular shapes to go around the curve of the pond)
A couple of years ago we had created a concrete surround to the pond, with reinforcing mesh, in readiness for the paving. Now we trimmed the pond liner back ready for the paving.
Reflection of Sky and Cloud with the finished paving in place. I will need to sort the turf out, in Spring 2015, to get it flush with the paving so that I can run the mower right up to the paving.
2015 – Marginals at back of pond
At the back of the middle pond is a marginal border. Its slightly above the waterline (cockup in getting the levels “Just right” when I originally excavated the pond), and because of that the soil was dry and I have been ignoring it for several years, pending finishing the Round Pond. As part of paving around the perimeter of the round pond I piped in some perforated drainage pipe, from the weir exit of the round pond, to provide below-soil irrigation all along the back border. Now that is all finished I can now get on with planting the back border of the middle pond.
This is how it looked in April 2014. The water lily baskets always seem to float to the surface in winter, I can never get enough rocks on them to weight them down. The marginal border is on the right of the photograph
Looking at it from a bit further back shows the raised bed behind the marginal border.
By August 2014 the plants in the raised bed were in full leaf, as were the climbers on the sleepers, and gives an idea of how the back marginal border will look. My thought is to plant Hostas, Colocasia and perhaps some Arum lilies in the border.
Some further changes to the drive in 2021
Fed up with White Van Man driving over, and wrecking, the edges
I was just doing a search to find answers to a vine question and have ended up spending ages on your site. I love it! What fun your projects are and what fun to read about it all. I also started a ‘garden blog’ at the begining of a project but it lapsed and I took it ‘off-line’. You have inspired me to restart!
Really looking fantastic now.. Not looked for a long time & some super changes… Great to have the space time & spondulacs to do it…
One day you will hopefully be able to sit back, glass in hand & look at it all & say… ” Wow, I did that & what a job”…!!!!! Smile……
Thanks Marley. Writing about it, and folk stopping by the website to have a look, is very therapeutic. Although the place continues to look like a building site, showing people round who visit us just once a year its pleasing to be able to show & tell them what we have done in the last 12 months.
